Moral Panic

when the mass media demonise groups, people or products that they believe become a threat to society values and interests it is called 'moral panic'(Stanley Cohen, 1972)

The group/products are referred to as 'folk devils'

people like:

  • foreigners
  • extremists
  • youth - gangs
  • bad behaviour
  • white chavs
media bias - media only shown in one representation
sensationalist - top stories exaggerated to make money

All representations are mediated(Hall, 1980)
